There’s no surprise when we say that projects based on serial killers are usually sitting on top of viewership charts. The audience is intrigued to learn about what exactly goes on in their minds when they commit horrendous and unspeakable crimes. One such show is Netflix’sMindhunterwhich boasts the Oscar-nominated David Fincher as its executive producer.

Mindhunterhad a unique take on the popular genre as two FBI agents strived to solve cases by interviewing and studying serial killers. These interview sessions were the heart of the show and were intelligently spooky, unlike the cheap and overdone jump scares. Unfortunately for the die-hard fan base, it looks likeMindhunterisn’t returning for a third season as stated by David Fincher himself.

Mindhunterhas two seasons to its name and it looks like it’s going to stay that way, even thoughDavid Fincheronce revealed that he plans on making five seasons for the show. A Netflix representative once told TV Line that while Fincher was busy withMankandLove, Death and Robots, “he may revisit Mindhunter again in the future.”However, in a new interview with the French newspaper, Le Journal du Dimanche (JDD), Fincher stated that Netflix does not believe thatMindhunterwould be a good enough investment for it to return.

“I’m very proud of the first two seasons. But it’s a particularly expensive show and, in the eyes of Netflix, we haven’t attracted a large enough audience to justify such an investment. I don’t blame them, they took risks to launch the series.”
The last episode of the second season aired on June 25, 2025, and since then the show has been on indefinite hold. Since it’s been a few years now, all the hope for the“indefinite hold”to end has died. Fincher even stated back in 2020 that a third season will not happen thanks to the“expensive”nature of the series. Fans have been hearing variations of this news for some time now, but these words from Fincher seem to be the final punch to the gut. Needless to say, fans of the show are heartbroken as they took to Twitter to express their disappointment.

David Fincher confirmed that there will be no season 3 for#Mindhunter.

Apart from being a fan-favorite,Mindhunterwas also appreciated by the critics. The show even managed to earn a 96% Rotten Tomatoes rating and even the audience rating is 95%. The show was a rare example of the audience agreeing with the critics! Despite all of that, Netflix clearly isn’t interested in bringingMindhunterback.

WhatMindhunterSeason 3 would’ve been about
The series gave us the chills with its interviews with a bunch of infamous serial killers including, Charles Manson, Edward Kemper, Richard Speck, and others. Despite the heartbreaking news, episode directorAndrew Dominikonce talked to Collider about the story that would’ve been shown in the third season. Going into Hollywood, the show would feature depictions of Jonathan Demme andMichael Mann, famous directors in the serial killer genre.
“What they were going to do with season three was they were going to go ]to] Hollywood. So one of them was going to be hooking up with Jonathan Demme and the other one was going to be hooking up with Michael Mann. And it was all going to be about profiling making it into the sort of zeitgeist, the public consciousness. It would’ve been…that was the season everyone was really waiting for to do, with when they sort of get out of the basement and start.”
Even though the storyline looked promising, unfortunately, the show has no plans to get renewed for a third season. We are just going to have to re-watch the masterpiece over and over again!
Mindhunteris available to stream on Netflix.
