Guillermo del Toro, a renowned Mexican director, is celebrated for his creative and intricately fantastical narratives. Why Guillermo Del Toro Opted Out OfPacific Rim 2?
In a conversation withCollider, the acclaimed director shared that he had initially been slated to helmPacific Rim Uprisinguntil production relocated to China.
Del Toro told Collider:
“We were getting ready to do it, it was different from the first, but it had a continuation of many of the things that I was trying to do. Then what happened is — I mean, this is why life’s crazy, right? — they had to give a deposit for the stages at 5pm or we would lose the stages in Toronto for many months.”
The firstPacific Rimwas also shot in Toronto, but, regrettably, the required deposit was never submitted. He continued,

“So, I said, ‘Don’t forget we’re gonna lose the stages. And five o’clock came and went, and we lost the stages.”
Following the production company’s loss of the Toronto stages, the production relocated to China. Regrettably, this move had to proceed withoutGuillermo Del Toro, who had to withdraw from the sequel due to his prior commitment to directingThe Shape of Water,a film that would later earn the prestigious Best Picture award at the 2018 Academy Awards. Meanwhile,Pacific Rim 2failed to make a significant impact.

Harvey Weinstein Questioned Guillermo Del Toro’s Creative Choices
Guillermo del Toro harbored immense enthusiasm for the creation ofMimic, a horror film centering around a multitude of insects. This particular project was one he eagerly anticipated, and it marked a collaboration withHarvey Weinstein’sMiramax Television company. However, despite his deep affection for the film, his association with the company proved to be an unpleasant ordeal.
The conflicts over casting decisions and constant alterations to the script transformed this experience into one of the most challenging moments in his filmmaking career. During an interview withThe Hollywood Reporter, the director openly shared the escalating difficulties he encountered during this tumultuous period.

For a year and a half, he dedicated himself to crafting a meticulously detailed insect. The entire film prominently featured these insects, which appeared to raise concerns at Miramax. As soon as the insect was finally finished, he found himself facing inquiries and doubts about his creative decisions.
