In today’s world where there is great dominance of Artificial Intelligence, making a film that revolves around such a narrative is an uncommon theme. However, filmmaker Spike Jonze explored this theme long before it became a common motif in the film industry. In 2013, a film featuring Joaquin Phoenix was released, that revolved around a man who fell in love with an AI.

Even though this concept was fresh then, the filmmaker feared that budding voice-operating AI tools may spoil the buzz of the film. However, nothing could hinder the amazing plot of Jonze’s film asHereventually earned the Academy Award.

In 2013, Spike Jonze delivered a masterpiece calledHer. The film featured iconic actorJoaquin Phoenixand the mesmerizing voice of Scarlett Johansson. The narrative revolves around an introverted writer, Theodore Twombly (played by Phoenix), who falls in love with an AI.
Since the film was released a decade ago, the dominance of AI was relatively less as not many people were aware of it. However, voice-operating AI software like Siri was already known to the public, and that’s what bothered the director ofHer.He thought this software could spoil the buzz of his film. During an appearance at the Toronto International Film Festival (viaThe Guardian) Jonze said humorously,

“In the middle of writing it, Siri came out, and we were like, ‘Oh, that sucks, they stole our thunder!’ But ultimately it didn’t matter, because it was inevitable. And our thing is so much different from Siri.”

The filmmaker further shared that, the idea of the film crossed his mind almost a decade before the film’s release when he“saw some article linking to a website where you could IM with an artificial intelligence.”
Jonze said, what looked thrilling for the initial 20 seconds became monotonous after it. However, those twenty seconds were indeed exciting as the more people got involved with the voice operating tool the more interesting it got.

Spike Jonze gave details on the casting of Her
Herfeatured Joaquin Phoenix in the lead role, and Marvel star Scarlett Johansson voiced the AI, Samantha. However, it was revealed by Spike Jonze that actress Samantha Morton was initially chosen to voice the female lead. He said,
“We ended up realizing that what Sam and I had done together, what we’d created, wasn’t working for where the movie was going. So we ended up recasting and casting Scarlett Johansson. But I think Samantha Morton is still in the film in some way, her DNA because she was with us when we shot it.”

Jonze also shared that it took 14 months for his team to editHer.Eventually, all the toil put on the film paid off, as it was critically acclaimed and earned the Academy Award.
