Just hours before the end of January, James Gunn and Peter Safran broke the internet by revealing the much-awaited slate for the first chapter of DCU. The duo has left the fans flabbergasted with their approach to crafting a cohesive universe for the DCU.

Apart from their plans to build an interconnected narrative for their universe, James Gunn has repeatedly stressed that the filmmaker’s vision will be the utmost priority for the studio. The director also confirmed that the DCU will not follow in the footsteps of the MCU and will be its own thing.

James Gunn and Peter Safran stressed the importance of storytelling in DCU
With the long-awaited slate being finally revealed by James Gunn, fans have been excited to witness the upcoming future of DC, which will be a more cohesive experience than its predecessor. But the DC head James Gunn has also emphasized that storytelling will be the utmost priority for their new universe.
In an interview with theHollywood Reporter,the duo ofJames Gunnand Peter Safran stressed the importance of screenplay for the DCU. The duo assured that all the creators involved with the projects will be given artistic freedom to develop their vision of the characters. And even though the movies and TV shows will be interconnected, the duo assures that every project is going to be thematically different. Gunn went on to state,

“It’s not the Gunnverse, it’s not. It’s got to be all these different feels from all these different stories. That’s what makes it so fun. The stories are completely different, and each has the individual expression of the writers and the director that are making those projects.”
The director also clarified that projects, includingThe BatmanandJoker,will take place outside the frontline DCU and the vision of their directors will not be hampered. These projects will be clearly labeled asElseworldsstories and explained that the bar for any project to be deemed as anElseworldsstory is set very high.

James Gunn assures that DCU is not Marvel 2.0
While explaining their approach for the new DC universe,The Suicide Squaddirector has made clear that the upcoming DCU will be nothing like their rival Marvel, and the filmmakers’ vision will be prioritized ahead of everything.
Even though the MCU is one of the biggest franchises in the world, its formulaic template over the years has led to some superhero fatigue among the fandom. The studio has also been criticized for not allowing complete freedom for a director’s vision, which led to a cooperate-friendly product and a mediocre experience for the fans.

ButThe Suicide Squaddirector has assured that the filmmakers will be given complete freedom to develop their vision. The director has also stressed that the projects will be thematically different to avoid the Superhero fatigue that Marvel has been dealing with. As Gunn said,“A lot of people are thinking this is Marvel 2.0. It’s not.”
