There’s a scene inAvengers: Endgame thathas given a hard time to the production because they had to face huge complexities while filming that particular one. It was the funeral of MCU’s pivotal character—Tony Stark—which was challenging to manage.

It faced logistical challenges due to a lack of CGI (computer-generated imagery) assistance. Another reason was the Russo Brothers had to do everything they could to guard the secrets of theirAvengersmovies.

Avengers: Endgame‘s Robert Downey Jr. Scene was a Production Nightmare
At that time, Marvel had become extra cautious about operational security because they knew the whisper of MCU developments could generate rampant internet headlines. Because some of the leakers were studios’ own actors.
In their conversation withEW Radio, Anthony Russo spoke about being worried aboutEndgame‘s contents being kept under wraps. As he said:

“It was an interesting day because getting all of those actors together at one level is very celebratory and joyful, but it was for a difficult reason in this scene. And also, the story point in the scene was one of the biggest secrets in the movie, so we had to be very, very quiet about it.”
It was revealed when Marvel Studios took a tenth-anniversary group photo the same week. It helped provide a cover story for everyone converging on Atlanta. Joe Russo remembered (written inMCU: The Reign of Marvel Studios):

“The day they got there, and we started to dress them in the black outfits, they said, “This isa very strange wedding.’ [Russo brothers said] ‘It’s because it’s actually a funeral.”
The casting director, Sarah Halley Finn, also said,“An Academy Award should go to the producer, who had to get everybody on set and match up all their schedules.”It is because she was also present there and observed how hard it was to manage the actors, most of whom were global stars too.

Marvel’s Tactical Filming for Robert Downey Jr.’s Scene inAvengers: Endgame
The scene was shot in a nearby soundstage. It was the same location whereRobert Downey Jr.auditioned forIron Mana decade before. When the president of Marvel Studios watched the scene, he wondered how much both of their lives (Downey’s and his) life had changed since that audition.
The Russos shot the scene at a cabin on the 8,000-acre Bouckaert Farm (property in Georgia). It was used as Tony Stark’s lakeside cabin.
The location was only 30 minutes away from the airport, so they could reach there quickly and also prevent the “wedding” news from leaking. This was a very smart way to prevent leaks.
As per the MCU: The Reign of Marvel Studios, Tom Holland and Mark Ruffalo, especially, had a knack for revealing plot twists. They even sometimes accidentally stream MCU screenings on their phones. So, they didn’t tell their actors anything until they reached there.
