Monarch: Legacy of Monstersis the latest addition to the MonsterVerse on AppleTV+ and fans are already in love with the series. With through-the-roof ratings and a spectacular storyline, more and more people are tuning in to watch the series as the days pass.
Director Matt Shakman and creators Chris Black and Matt Fraction had been so in love with the project that they didn’t want just anotherGodzillamovie. In fact, the creators wanted to avoid the term ‘Godzillaspin-off’ at all costs and instead, create a standalone story!

With titans and monsters roaming the world, Matt Fraction and Chris Black decided to instead base their story on a family. Depicting from the ground level,Monarch: Legacy of Monstersshows a family drama and betrayal instead of the regular titan battles.

Finding their own line and a different point of view, the trio of Fraction, Black, and,Matt Shakmansat down for an interview withThe Vergeto discuss their magnum opus of a series. While talking about the latest project, Fraction revealed that he hated how they could avoidMonarchbeing a“Godzilla spin-off”.
“We didn’t want to make a Godzilla spinoff show; we wanted to make a series that lived in that world. People go to Godzilla movies to see Godzilla, but we knew we couldn’t compete with the spectacle, and we weren’t even going to try.”
He further continued,
“The movies are where the buildings get knocked down, but this show is where people are getting up again, dusting themselves off, and figuring out, “What does my life mean now when my world has changed entirely?”

With the idea of focusing more on the humans rather than the gigantic monsters, Matt Fraction and Chris Black were skeptical about who would actually pick up the script. Luckily for the duo, Legendary Entertainment extended their hand and gave them full creative freedom for the project.
“One of the first conversations I had with them was when they asked if I wanted to be involved, and I asked, “Does it have to be like the movies?” And they said, “No, it should be whatever you think works best.”said Chris Black.
He continued,
“With that freedom, when Matt and I started working on it, we just decided that the way in was through this family – through the foundational essence of the Randa family.”
Having only 2 episodes released so far,Monarch: Legacy of Monstersalready debuted to a rating of 7.7/10 on IMDB and a whopping 93% on Rotten Tomatoes! Adding a unique part to the MonsterVerse, the next episode is slated for a release date of 28 June 2025 and will be available to stream on Apple TV+ in the U.S.
