The secret ingredients that turn a good film into a blockbuster are oftentimes never given too much thought, at least not by the general public as all they need is a good film that is entertaining to them and which they can enjoy. Margot Robbie, one of the biggest names in Hollywood in modern times has stuck to making films that incorporate these traits to become a revered star in the industry.

But just making blockbusters isn’t enough, especially when the vision far exceeds the requirements of the definition of a successful film. Therefore, to bring something new that will create waves among the audience, risks need to be taken with the formulation and execution of the project. Robbie’s latest film was one such gamble that she thanks director Steven Spielberg for making a possibility.

From the creation of world-changing inventions and discoveries to the making of some of the most memorable films in the history of cinema, all of them had one thing in common, and it was the risk that was taken in the possibility of something grand. Although many of them might’ve failed, there were some that revolutionized everything, especially in the Hollywood industry when legendary filmmakerSteven Spielbergbrought usJurassic Park, a film that’s still considered a masterpiece to this day.

Taking this as an example, Australian actressMargot Robbiepitched the idea of her latest projectBarbieto the executives at Warner Bros. Since the production company had been dealing with the last two years of their projects being flopped at the big screen, they were hesitant to take a big risk with the film. But by reminding them of the aforementioned facts and results of risks taken in the past, she was able to get the film greenlit. In a recent interview, she said:

Steven Spielberg on the sets of Jurassic Park

“I think my pitch in the green-light meeting was the studios have prospered so much when they’re brave enough to pair a big idea with a visionary director. And then I gave a series of examples like, “dinosaurs and [Steven] Spielberg,” that and that, that and that – pretty much naming anything that’s been incredible and made a ton of money for the studios over the years. And I was like, “And now you’ve got Barbie and Greta Gerwig.” And I think I told them that it’d make a billion dollars, which maybe I was overselling, but we had a movie to make, okay?!”

And with the world premiere of the film, it seems like the risk has paid off asBarbieenjoys the highest opening day box office numbers of any film released this year with a staggering $70.5 Million figure.

The success that Great Gerwig’s directorial project is receiving boils down to the simple yet impactful implication of an existing idea in a new form. Since Barbie dolls are some of the most iconic toys in the market, a live-action adaptation was sure to bring the attention of the consumer base. A substantial narrative and plot of the film along with it being entertaining are some of the reasons why Barbie is beating the competition at the box office.
