Lethal Companyclimbing through the ranks and becoming the top-selling game on Steam has to be one of the most inspiring underdog stories coming out of the industry in recent times, especially considering just how stacked 2023 was with anticipated AAA titles.

Lethal Company climbs to the top of Steam’s Top Sellers chart, beating Call of Duty and Counter-Strike 2.

These included the latest instalment in theCall of Dutyfranchise,Modern Warfare 3, which was released earlier this month, but even with the hype surrounding its launch, it got beaten by an indie co-op horror title that literally just costs $10. To make matters even more interesting,Lethal Companyis still in its early access phase and is still awaiting a complete release, and if it is proving to be this formidable now, it is bound to be unstoppable in its final form.

Lethal Company Is Now the Best-Selling Game on Steam

For those unfamiliar withLethal Company, which is to be expected due to it being an indie title with barely any major coverage, it is a co-op game developed and published by just one individual developer, which makes its recent success even more impressive. It combines the sci-fi and horror genres with space exploration as players are sent to different moons to collect scraps and sell them to a shady organization called the “Company.”

The twist inLethal Company‘s premise is that the aforementioned moons have the potential to actually be haunted and quite dangerous to tread on.

Lethal Company‘s well-deserved top-selling status on Steam is amazing proof that the video game industry can, at times, surprise everybody in the best way possible, with most similar underdog success stories taking place on PC’s popular platform rather than consoles. It does not happen too often, but when it does, like it did with titles like this year’sBattleBit Remasteredor 2020’sPhasmophobia, it is just a spectacular breath of fresh air.

Lethal Companybeating every other game on the list, includingCall of Duty,Counter-Strike 2, and even the Game of the Year nomineeBaldur’s Gate 3, is an outstanding feat no matter how one looks at it.

Solo developer and publisher Zeekerss officially launched the early access ofLethal Companyon Steam last month on October 23, and currently, it is enjoying its well-earned spot in second place on the platform’s global top sellerschart. Moreover, the game is not a huge success in terms of just its total sales because the majority of the players who have tried it out are absolutely loving the experience.

In fact,Lethal Companyhas over 26,000reviewson Steam, and most of them are “Overwhelmingly Positive,” with more than 73,000 gamers simultaneouslyplayingthe title at the time of writing.

Not Even Modern Warfare 3 Is Safe From the Lethal Company

To putLethal Company‘s applaudable feat into more perspective, aside from the titles already mentioned above, it is placed higher thanPUBG,Cyberpunk 2077, andForza Horizon 5on Steam’s global top sellers chart. That means more people are opting to go for a $10 indie title with untapped potential still in its early access instead of paying $70 for a major AAA release since the charts are put together considering the total revenue generated by each product.

The only obstacle standing betweenLethal Companyand first place is the Steam Deck, which, let’s face it, does not seem to be going lower anytime soon.

Looking at the extremely positive reviews for the game on Steam, there seem to be various reasons why so many players are absolutely lovingLethal Company. One such review called the game “A surprise drop that is genuinely a masterpiece” due to its ability to “create many of the greatest cut off scream clips and best comedic timing.” Furthermore, the player stated that they “would rather buy”Lethal Company“5 times more instead of MW3.”

For those wondering for how longLethal Companyplans to stay in its early access phase, developer and publisher Zeekersssaysthat it is scheduled to be finished “within 6 months,” but of course, it will not completely be released until he is “satisfied with it.” He also said that it all “depends on players’ reactions to”Lethal Company, and considering how more than enough people seem to be enjoying it, it seems to be doing just fine.

Ever since Osama was gifted the glorious PS2 more than two decades back, video games have formed a major part of his life, ranging from spending hours playing through every single Dragon Ball game he could find to witnessing the gaming industry evolve into something extraordinary in modern times. Building his collection of PlayStation consoles throughout the years all the way up until PS5, he prefers single-player experiences like The Last of Us and Persona, while also letting off steam on a daily basis with casual EA Sports FC matches. But the current rise in online multiplayer shooters will never really appeal to his old-school self.
