Since their last appearance, they have acquired Knowhere, fans discovered the relationship between Mantis and Star-Lord, and now the Guardians have a new ship.

More characters were added by James Gunn in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 (2017).

Fans have been curious about what happened to their last ship, Benatar after they saw the new ship in theHoliday Special. And James Gunn has answered the questions as he replied to a fan’s quarry on Mastodon.

James Gunn Explains Why Guardians Have a New Ship

Guardians of the Galaxy: Holiday Specialintroduced the new ship of the Guardians, Bowie. Previous films in the series featured two different ships, including Ryder and Milano.

And the Guardians made their MCU debut on another ship, the Benatar, which first appeared inAvengers: Infinity War.Although the new ship, ‘Bowie,’ originally comes from comics, it is taken asJames Gunn’stribute to the late singer and actor David Bowie.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 aims to end Rocket’s MCU story

The director recently shared a note from Santa on Mastodon. One of the fans asked him about the Guardians’ last ship, Benatar. The fans asked,“@jamesgunn,by the way, the interesting question I have for you. What happened to The Guardians’ last ship Benatar? Are we gonna have to wait and find out in Vol. 3?”

He made it clear thatVol. 3will not explore anything regarding the Guardians losing Benatar. TheSuperdirector explained,“It’s more simple than that – Rocket just keeps upgrading ships.”Earlier in November, Gunn shared via Twitter that Benatar still exists, but it’s much smaller for the Guardians now.

He said,“It still exists it’s just much smaller,”suggesting the upgrade was something they required. Since the trailer release of the film, there have been speculations about Rocket being the focus ofVol. 3.And the new comment about Rocket making the upgrade in the ship could also be another hint that he would have a prominent role in the upcoming film.

Rocket Has Been the Secret Protagonist of theGuardiansMovies

In his interview with Entertainment Weekly, James Gunn shared thatVol. 3will explore who these characters really are. He shared,“This is the big one”as he explained why he decided to come back for the third and probably the final film in the series.

“One of the reasons why I came back to [make] this movie was because I felt like I needed to tell Rocket’s story,”thePeacemakerdirector explained. He then shared that he feels connected to the character and felt like“nobody would be able to tell his full story”if he didn’t.

Gunn also shared that all the Guardians have been through traumas, but somehow he feels that Rocket’s trauma is“more extreme than others.”He shared that he was turned into something he never asked for. Gunn also called him the“secret protagonist”of the Guardians movies.

The director has made it clear that one of the motives behind theGuardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3has been giving Rocket the satisfying arc he deserves. He also shared that the third installment took longer than the previous two films, and it gave him extra time to work on the plot and characters.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3is expected to be the final film in theGuardians of the Galaxyfilm series. However, Pom Klementieff, the actress who plays Mantis, believes thatVol. 3is not the end of the Guardians’ story.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3is set to release on July 29, 2025.
