Double Fine Productions, Inc., the San Francisco based game developer behindPsychonautsandPsychonauts 2,has made a disappointing announcement about the current state of Psychonauts 3. Tim Schafer, president, founder, and CEO of Double Fine as well as director of the Psychonaut games, explained in an interview with Cressup, that a future title is not in development at the moment. He stated:

“I’m not working on Psychonauts 3. We’re kind of at the ‘Willy Wonka closed doors’ phase. But soon we could open and cause a lot of harm to a lot of children, just like Willy Wonka.”
Although Schafer did not actually announce the title in the interview with Cressup, many believe his statement is hinting at the possibility of a reveal in the near future. In June 2019, Double Fine was acquired by Microsoft, which is just one more developer added to the ever growing list of companies that have been purchased for the Xbox.

What Will Be the Next Step for Double Fine, Now That It Has Been Purchased by Microsoft?
There was some expectationPsychonauts 3would be announced at the Xbox Games Showcase 2023, due to a tweet by Xbox Australia, which looked like a tic tac toe game spelling out “psycho.” However, it was revealed this mysterious message was meant as a reference to a different game calledNoughts and Crosses.Schafer seemed to give no clue as to whenPsychonauts 3will be announced or if it is in the current plans for Xbox Games Studio. Fans are hopeful, whatever happens, they will not be waiting as long for the third game as it took to develop the second one.Psychonautswas released in 2005 on Xbox and PlayStation 2 andPsychonauts 2came out in 2021 on Xbox One, Xbox Series S/X, and PlayStation 4. The 16 year wait was a lot for fans of the franchise, so they can only hope history is not doomed to repeat itself.

Schafer has been adamant he wants the studio to begin working on a new and original game outside ofPsychonauts. Since Microsoft will now provide the company with much more vast resources, it is very possible this wish could become a reality for the Double Fine founder. If this is the case, then it certainly isn’t looking good for the possibility ofPsychonauts 3coming out any time in the near future. The upside to this, however, is the developer no longer has to worry about getting the money to make games through Kickstarter or any other funding method. As of 2015, the studio had 65 employees, but it is also possible with Microsoft as a parent company, the team could expand. Perhaps being under Xbox Games Studio will allow forPsychonauts 3and a new title to be under development at the same time.
Should Double Fine work on a new game and leave some space betweenPsychonauts 2andPsychonauts 3or should the developer stick to what they know fans love and get to work on the next entry into the franchise? Let us know in the comments which direction you think Microsoft and Double Fine should take.
