However, before she embarked on her path as a prominent filmmaker, she started as an actress in her father’s critically acclaimed movieGodfather: Part III. And it wasn’t because she wanted to be an actress but rather because of her father’s insistence. In an interview withThe Talks, she revealed how awkward the experience was for her,

“It was hard because I was 18 and the last thing you want to do at that age is listen to what your parents say. My dad was directing me, so it was awkward because I am not naturally an actress but I just wanted to try everythingand wasn’t expecting that so many people would look at it. It was a learning experience but since I never wanted to be an actress it wasn’t devastating for me that people generally weren’t too fond of me being in it.”

After her experience as an actress in her father’s movie, Sofia Coppola decided to take her route. Off she went to college and even started her clothing company. But it was her very first short film that made her realize her true passion lay in the art of filmmaking.

However, she maintained that she did not feel much pressure since she was a ‘daughter’ and society tends to have different expectations regarding daughters. But defying social and gender norms nonetheless, Coppola took her own sweet time to figure out what direction she wanted to take regarding filmmaking.

Moving away from her father’s shadow she has since infused her movies with her own distinctive style and aesthetic, focusing on intimate storytelling with prominently strong female protagonists, with meticulously selected musical scores adding extra depth to her brilliantly crafted storylines.
