While the former couple never confirmed anything, reports claimed that the two separated because of Richard Gere’s interest in Ryder, who starred alongside her in the 1999 filmAutumn in New York. However, Matt Damon denied such claims during his interview with Playboy.
He also opened up about how the tabloids’ gossip surrounding his relationships took a toll on him. After this, he decided to keep his relationship out of the public eye and shared he did not want to date any celebrities after that.

“[I]f you’re the cover child or the cover couple, then you’re f*cked. And don’t date a celebrity. I don’t think I could fall in love with a celebrity right now.”
He shared that dating a celebrity would require him to change his lifestyle, which he was not very comfortable with.“I like that my lifestyle feels normal to me most of the time,”he said. He would then meet his future wife, Luciana Barroso, in a bar in 2003, and the two got married in a small ceremony in 2005.
