Greta Gerwig on transitioning between ‘bigger’ and ‘smaller’ movies like Christopher Nolan
During the conversation,Greta Gerwigfurther revealed that, like many directors, she has a “fantasy baseball league” of movies she aspires to make. And some of these projects would require a larger canvas to tell their stories. However, she also noted the tendency of directors to transition between bigger and smaller films.
“I think probably every director has a fantasy baseball league in their head of what movies they want to make. There’s some movies I’d like to make that require a big canvas. At the same time, I’ve seen so many directors move between bigger movies and smaller movies:Chloé Zhao doing Nomadland and making Eternals. Or Steven Soderbergh, or even my weekend buddy Chris Nolan. He made the Dark Knight trilogy – and they’re wonderful – and then made The Prestige, which is not a tiny movie, but it is also not the same thing. I want to play in lots of different worlds. That’s the goal.”

In recent reports, it was revealed that Gerwig has signed on to write and direct at least two movies in a rebooted version of the Chronicles of Narnia franchise. These films will be exclusively released on Netflix, which acquired the rights to the Narnia series in 2018. Previously, the saga inspired three movies produced by Disney and Fox in the 2000s. While specific details about the release dates of the new Narnia movies are currently unavailable, Gerwig’s involvement in the project showcases her versatility as a director and her ability to tackle beloved and expansive literary adaptations.
