When people watched the film for the first time, it was a spectacle to behold. The visuals it offered, the long-awaited reunions it finally gave the audience, and most importantly, it did justice to several characters. One scene in particular had the audience screaming because of how long they had waited for it. Captain America lifting Mjolnir was a grand moment. However, it was also one that caused a lot of debate within the franchise.

Thor’s Rebranding Did Not Come Without Overall Issues

Before Taika Waititi took over theThorfranchise,Chris Hemsworth’scharacter was a much different person than what the fans are now used to seeing him as. He has a comedic side, he is more human in ways that separate him from humanity than anything else.MCU: The Reign of Marvel Studiosdescribes him as a ‘self-absorbed and absurd yet still a virtuous hero.’

His journey inThor: Ragnarokcame with a certain sense of issues for the overall franchise. The MCU was met with continuity errors that they were somehow made to manage. In fact, Stephen McFeely and Christopher Markus were forced to change aspects ofAvengers: Endgame and Infinity Warto accommodate these new ideas. However, another obstacle in their path was Steve Rogers’ most iconic scene.

Chris Evans’ Captain America’s Most Important Scene Became Difficult to Execute

Avengers: Endgamecomes full circle with a sequence that was hinted at as early asAvengers: Age of Ultron.Steve Rogers’ being worthy of lifting Mjolnir has been something fans have been waiting to see for years. Although,Thor: Ragnarokestablished Chris Hemsworth’s hero to be the God of Lightning, capable of wielding thunder despite his access to the hammer in particular. So the question they came to face was, why wouldChris Evans’Captain America be able to summon lightning with the hammer alone?

“There was certainly a debate at one point because particularly in Ragnarok, it establishes that Thor can summon the lightning without the hammer. I think Odin even says, ‘It was never the hammer.’ And yet Cap summons the lightning with the hammer. You get to those things and you’re like, ‘It’s too awesome not to do it! We’ll talk about it later.'”

Christopher Markus, inMCU: The Reign of Marvel Studios, confirmed that this had been an ongoing debate since 2015, meaning that they had been planning for this moment for many years. The decision in the end was to just let the sequence be as is, and have it be dealt with in future scenes or movies. If any more thought was put into the scene of Steve Rogers lifting Mjolnir, then it could easily ruin the massive significance it otherwise had.
